Freight Broker License Requirements: Startup Checklist

Business registration, a freight-broker bond, and federal operating authority serve different purposes. Organize each before taking on brokerage work.

Business setup

Choose your business structure with appropriate professional advice. Confirm entity, tax, and local requirements with the relevant agencies. The state startup guides identify official resources for nine states.

Federal authority and financial security

FMCSA's broker checklist includes the appropriate authority application, $75,000 of financial security through BMC-84 or BMC-85, a BOC-3 process-agent designation, and a nonrefundable $300 application fee. That government fee is separate from a bond premium.

Use FMCSA's current registration instructions for your circumstances. Registration systems and processing steps can change; do not rely on an old screenshot or an advertised approval timeline.

Bond or trust?

The BMC-84 vs. BMC-85 guide explains practical differences to discuss with a provider. Consider funding, collateral, fees, reimbursement obligations, and replacement arrangements.

Before operating

Continuing responsibility

FMCSA's current rules address reductions in available financial security. A shortfall below $75,000 that is not replenished within the required seven-calendar-day period can lead to suspension. Contact the provider promptly about any notice and check the official guidance for your case.

A quote does not grant a license, issue a bond, or activate authority. Approval and terms depend on provider review.
