BMC-84 Freight Broker Bond Requirements & Filing Guide
Your freight broker bond is one part of the registration process. Issuing a bond does not, by itself, activate operating authority.
Prepare your business information
Use your exact legal business name and address. Have your authority number available if assigned. Differences between your application and registration can require corrections, so review the details before submission.
Understand the registration checklist
- Apply for the appropriate authority using the current FMCSA registration process.
- Meet the financial security requirement with an acceptable BMC-84 bond or BMC-85 trust.
- Arrange the required process-agent designation, generally filed on BOC-3.
- Confirm all required filings are accepted and authority is active before operating.
Who submits the bond filing?
The authorized surety provider files the BMC-84 electronically. Ask your agent about the expected process and how to verify the result. A quote form is not a government application or filing.
Keep renewal and notice dates visible
Track your provider, bond number, renewal date, and business contact details. Respond promptly to payment, claim, and cancellation notices. Changes in ownership or legal name should be discussed with your provider before assuming the old bond remains appropriate.
Claims and financial security
A paid claim can affect the amount of available security and trigger federal requirements. Contact your provider immediately about any notice of a reduction or cancellation. The bond is not a substitute for maintaining funds to meet your business obligations.
General guidance only, not a legal opinion or approval to operate. Consult FMCSA and your provider for requirements that apply to your circumstances.
